1. FADE IN:
EXT. FORT BRAGG – TRAINING AREA – DAWN
A murky gray North Carolina sky presses low over SWAMP-FED WOODS. Humid, wet, uneven terrain. A LINE OF SOLDIERS in full rucks slog downhill through ANKLE-DEEP MUD.
CLOSE ON a rusted RUCK BUCKLE, jammed and stubborn.
SHANE ALEXANDER (30s), mud-streaked, moves with a steady, controlled intensity. He pries at the buckle as he walks.
The buckle SNAPS free with a metallic POP. The ruck shifts on his back. He doesn't break stride.
Behind him, a SOLDIER slips and FACE-PLANTS into the mud with a THUD and a MUFFLED CURSE.
Shane doesn't look back.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
Assessment and Selection for Special Operations. Designed to break you, then see what's left.
EXT. WOODS – CONTINUOUS
The LINE OF CANDIDATES trudges through KNEE-HIGH BROWN WATER. Each man looks like the next — mud-caked, exhausted, hollow-eyed.
INSTRUCTOR (O.S.)
(calling out)
Five miles to the checkpoint!
No one reacts. No one cheers.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
Three days with no sleep. Thirty hours since they ate. Instructions vague on purpose. No one to impress. No one to save you.
Shane's gaze turns inward, his face blank, mechanical.
NARRATOR (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Fatigue was a kind of mercy. It kept Bosnia out of his head.
7. INT. INTERVIEW ROOM – CONTINUOUS
A bare, temporary-looking office. METAL DESK. Two CHAIRS. No insignia anywhere.
Behind the desk sits MAN IN UNIFORM (EARLY 40s) – receding hairline, tired skin, sharp gray eyes. Boots too clean for field work.
SHANE
So you want me in cartel territory, with strangers, to pull out two civilians under rules that may or may not exist, with no guarantee of extraction if it goes bad.
The Man nods once.
SHANE
And I'm doing this because I'm expendable.
MAN
That was the language in your file. I won't argue it. Your status gives us deniability.
A long beat.
SHANE
I'm not here for redemption.
MAN
We know. That's why you're useful. You don't need thanks to be effective.
He opens a DRAWER, pulls out a SLIM ENVELOPE, slides it across.
MAN (CONT'D)
Read that after you leave this room. Memorize it. Then destroy it.
Shane stands, salutes mechanically, turns to go. At the door, he pauses.
SHANE
You ever sent a man on a mission you didn't expect him to come back from?
The Man doesn't blink.
SHANE
Then I guess it's mine.
Shane exits.
75. INT. TUNNEL – APPROACH TO COMMAND POST – NIGHT
Green NVG view. Dirt walls. Shane inches along a bend, carbine up.
Around the corner: a LOW CHAMBER — reinforced, lit by bare bulbs.
In the chair: JOSÉ ORLANDO HENAO MONTOYA (50s). Shirt sleeves rolled, gold watch at his wrist, hands folded, calm.
Montoya's eyes meet his. He smiles faintly.
MONTOYA (SPANISH)
You found the hole. I wondered which one of you would.
MONTOYA
You're far from your rally point, Sergeant.
SHANE
You're far from your throne.
Montoya chuckles.
MONTOYA
Thrones are for men who last. I'm just a function. A broker. You kill me, someone else takes the phone.
SHANE
You ordered the grab.
MONTOYA
I approved a correction. Wrong car, wrong faces. Not my mistake. But my opportunity.
He studies Shane like a curiosity.
MONTOYA (CONT'D)
You're here because you think if you break the head, the body dies. It doesn't.
SHANE
Maybe not. But it bleeds.
He steps in fast.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
He'd wanted a kill. What he got was leverage.
